The NICPRI - Centre of Research in Political Science and International Relations was formally created in May 2000, being funded since 2004, by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology [Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia] under the Multi-Year Funding Program for R&D Units.
The NICPRI is since 2007 an interinstitutional and interdisciplinary research centre, with one managing institution - the University of Minho, and two poles, one located at the University of Minho, and another one located at the University of Évora.
In 2008, NICPRI was granted the evaluation of EXCELLENT. This evaluation of R&D units was carried out by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology [Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia].
The NICPRI is also official representative of the ECPR - European Consortium for Political Research.
As an interinstitutional and interdisciplinary centre, the NICPRI organises its research and advanced training activities in regard to two major axes.
"State, European Union and International Relations", primordially developed by the members located in the University of Minho.
"Europe, Society, Citizenship and Global Dynamics" primordially developed by the members located in the University of Évora.
The NICPRI has an External Advisory Board (EAB) constituted by a pannel of three national and foreign researchers, of recognized academic and scientific merit. This committee is responsable for analysing the unit’s performance, and present an annual evaluation report regarding to the unit’s activity plan, management report and budget.
The External Advisory Board made in 2012 a new evaluation report, regarding the activities in 2011.
